Soft Alt Work Outfit: How to Add an Edgy Touch to Your Work Wardrobe
If you’ve ever looked at your work wardrobe and thought, This is fine, but where’s the personality? — girl, I get it.
I love an outfit that looks polished enough for the office but still feels like me. And if you’re into alternative fashion, you don’t have to save all your favorite style choices for the weekend. You can absolutely bring a little edge into your workwear without feeling like you’re wearing a costume to the office.
One of my favorite ways to do that? Start with a classic outfit, choose a color that makes a statement, and have a little fun with the accessories.
A Soft Alt Work Outfit That Still Feels Office-Ready
Burgundy is one of those colors that looks put together without trying too hard. It’s rich, a little moody, and a nice change from the usual black trousers and white blouse combination.
For this look, we’re starting with a burgundy wide-leg outfit and adding a few accessories that make the whole thing feel a little more alternative.
Here’s what I’d look for when putting together this kind of outfit:
- A burgundy top and wide-leg trousers
Wide-leg trousers are one of my favorite ways to make an outfit feel elevated without sacrificing comfort. Pair them with a matching top for a monochromatic look that feels intentional, even when you didn’t spend an hour figuring out what to wear.
The best part about a matching set is that you can wear the pieces together or mix them with things you already own. Try the trousers with a fitted black tee, or wear the top with your favorite pair of jeans.
- A statement backpack
Hear me out: a backpack can absolutely be a work bag.
I love the idea of pairing a structured black backpack with a black-and-white checkerboard pattern. It’s practical, a little unexpected, and gives the outfit that alternative touch without overwhelming the rest of the look.
Plus, if you’re carrying a laptop, planner, snacks, and approximately seventeen things you somehow need throughout the day, having a bag that actually holds your stuff is a win.
- Red and black statement heels
Okay, these are the kind of shoes that do all the talking.
A glossy red-and-black pump adds a pop of color and a little rock-and-roll energy to an otherwise polished outfit. If heels aren’t your thing for a full workday, you could easily swap them for black loafers, pointed-toe flats, or a sleek ankle boot.
The goal isn’t to suffer for fashion. We have enough going on already!
- Simple silver jewelry
Silver hoops are an easy way to finish this look. They’re clean, classic, and work especially well with the black-and-white accessories and deep burgundy color.
You don’t need a ton of jewelry when your shoes and bag already have personality. Sometimes a couple of good accessories are all you need.
How to Wear Alternative Fashion to the Office
The trick to making alternative workwear feel wearable is balancing statement pieces with classic silhouettes.
If you’re new to incorporating alternative style into your work wardrobe, start small. Try a black belt with interesting hardware, a pair of chunky loafers, or a bag with a little personality. You can build from there as you figure out what feels like you.
And remember, alternative style doesn’t have to mean dressing head-to-toe in black. Deep reds, burgundy, charcoal, olive, and even softer colors can work beautifully with edgy accessories.
You can look professional and still have a personal style. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive!
